USB UniMouse by Contour Design

a5If you’re an iMac/G3 user like myself, chances are you’ve grown accustomed to Apple’s hockey puck mouse. Call it a donut, call it a nuisance, but whatever you call it, you can put a stop to the puck, once and for all. Get a life! Your mouse doesn’t have to do the hula anymore!

Get Contour Design’s USB 3-Button UniMouse to end the misery and increase your productivity.

Offering five “yummy” iMac flavors (Blueberry/Bondi Blue, Grape, Lime, Tangerine and Strawberry), this boffo-looking two-tone translucent mouse provides comfort, function, style and fun for less than $40! Did I mention it matches perfectly with the iMac colors, including the original Bondi Blue babies?

The UniMouse has ergonomic features which offer comfort and control. I particularly liked the soft rubber side grips (which come in the same color as the computers) on the mouse and the comfortable size of the mouse itself. It doesn’t work well with mouse pads which have built-in wrist supports, though. You’ll need a flat mouse pad to reap the benefits of the UniMouse.

Although I’m right-handed, this mouse is an ambidextrous mouse which offers “Universal” palm support for all users.

Best of all for all you PC users, you don’t have to own a glorious Mac to reap the benefits of the USB UniMouse. The plug-n-play compatibility extends to PCs running Win98 or better. Programming the mouse is a little different for PC users. You can use the middle button to “soft-scroll” in any direction, while the right button will lead you to contextual menu options. You can also reverse the two outer buttons using the Windows standard control panel.

If you visit the Contour Design web site, you can download the drivers (drop-in extension drivers) you’ll need to program the buttons. For Mac OS 8.1 users, you’ll need to have the iMac Update Version 1.0 to use the driver. If using OS 8.5, you should install the OS 8.5.1 update.

To prove how simple the UniMouse is to operate, I plugged it in (hot-swappable) and used it on an iMac without additional drivers (and with all three buttons defaulted to a single-click). The middle button instantly felt perfect –whether clicking away at Web pages or creating massive text documents in Word.

Since the UniMouse comes in “yummy” and “tasty” flavors, it’s probably a good idea to keep it away from cats :-) Wonder if they like those hockey pucks, though?

Contour Design offers a 5-year limited warranty on the UniMouse.
